We are surrounded by mass market products. Inexpensive and easily replicated, they appear in all parts of the world. Quite often, we struggle to find handmade objects, and when we do, we are rewarded by the personal touch they add. They transform our utilitarian surroundings and make our spaces feel more like us, more 'home'. For me, art is an adventure that never ends. Inspired by my love for folk art, I create handmade ceramics that echo the rustic, eccentric expression - each with a personality of its own. Every one-of-a-kind piece starts with a simple idea, be it a sketch or a quotation, which I use to inspire the shape of the clay. I then glaze the pottery by hand and fire it in an electric kiln. The intricate patterns result from imprints of wood stamps and other handmade objects.
A graduate of the York Academy of Arts and spent my career in graphic design. As I began transitioning out of the professional area, I needed a new creative outlet, which is when I started taking pottery classes. To me, clay became the perfect medium for exploring design because of the juxtaposition between the shiny and dull, the dark and light, the old and new. Transforming a one dimensional design into form and texture captivates me and drives me to explore this art form everyday.
Celebrate the human, the marks people make on the world. Treasure the local, the small-scale, the eccentric; whatever is made out of caring. Respect what people have built for themselves. Find the beauty in time-worn art: a battered old porch, rusty metal or the peeling layers of paint and plaster of an old building.
I live near Austin Texas in a beautiful setting where I can watch deer and their fawns graze in my yard, take walks through the woods & see cactus blooming and wild flowers, or take my dog on daily swims in the lake. The serene surroundings make a perfect setting for my pottery studio.
